The Sixers made a statement that they wanted to keep their star player for the long haul. They did that by signing Joel Embiid to a massive 4 year 196 million dollar contract. That'll take Joel into his age 31 season under team control.
What can we expect during his Supermax contract? Off the top of my head scoring, rebounding, blocks, dunks, and an occasional flop. Most importantly, we can expect more winning. It's no question that Embiid is one of the elite players in the NBA, and at a position that is a dying trade. You must look much deeper than statistics to understand how impactful Joel is on the court. His presence alone allows perimeter shooters cleaner looks. On defense opposing teams tend to settle for jump shots to avoid the potential DPOY in the paint. He's hands down the best all-around center in the world.
Ben Simmons is as good as gone! What does that have to do with Embiid getting an influx of cash? Well first and foremost it's been apparent that the Co-stars can hardly coexist. They make for an odd fit given that Simmons can't and/or refuses to shoot the basketball. Secondly, a flurry of reports paint a picture that Embiid and Simmons aren't exactly soulmates. It's been reported that Simmons refuses (see a trend here?) to respond to Embiid's calls. So giving Joel a max extension means that Ben's time in Philly is winding down in hopes that they can find the big fella a better Robin.
