MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s pointers are the last thing Errol Spence needs.
Pacquiao and Spence will meet in a welterweight title showdown on August 21 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The two met for the first time at a press conference in Los Angeles on Monday.
“Errol doesn’t need Mayweather’s advice,” Pacquiao said. “I believe Errol is better than Mayweather. Hey it’s a [better] fighter than Mayweather.
“He could teach Mayweather how to fight from start to finish. “
In an ES News video last month, Mayweather said he would call Spence to “give him some advice” on how to beat the Filipino boxing legend.
Mayweather, who retired in 2017, defeated Pacquiao by unanimous decision in 2015.
Pacquiao, 42, said the fight against Spence was “perhaps the most difficult of my career.”
Spence acknowledged the high price with caution.
“It’s a big compliment,” said 5-foot-9, Spence, who is also left-handed. “But Manny Pacquiao is the kind of guy who can put you to sleep. He’ll give you a lot of compliments, gratitude, and things like that. Then as soon as the bell rings, he jumps on you.
Spence, 31, who is number six on the Ring’s pound-for-pound list, will stake his WBC and IBF titles as well as his unblemished 27-0 record with 21 knockouts. He comes off a dominant victory over Danny Garcia last December in Dallas, Texas.
Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KOs) is fighting for the first time since defeating Keith Thurman in July 2019.
