OBSCENE SERPENT RELIGION
Sorta Review - # 1 1/2
Sorta Review - # 1 1/2
"Erasing my face
I want you so badI want to be you
it's futile it's sad"
- Richard Hell
"So material a difference does it make, not what ills are suffered, but what kind of man suffers them."
- Saint Augustijn
I'll get to the reason-of-use behind these two quotes later. Or maybe I won't.
But I'd like to start with a preface-
What is a really vague but simple thing that I could say of the Chandler-Works that I have read thusfar?
Hmm..
Here goes: "They Bleed Themselves."
Now, let's think about this...................…..................................................................................................
Now, let's stop.
And On To The Sorta Review!!!
This is a book of Monastic Tenants, Codes of Conduct, Internal Sanctions, Gifts, Doctrine and Liturgical Practices. It has a supposed Order and Rank of ascension through character involvement.
The content is trangressive. The content is thoughtful and palatable. And it fucking rules.
It is published as a book for the means of designing a Serpent Religious Cult(ure). One which is capable of layering upon itself over time. Obscene Serpent Religion is thus a recyclable codex with avenues of tasks/performances/practices/belief emphases overlapping upon one another over time to create a fairly rich foundation for a novel religious idea.
Written for NPCs and PCs alike.
It has good art. Adi Pras is my favorite. Actually, Saint Siavacia (whom Pras illustrates) is really one of the most beautiful inclusions in O.S.R.
And I could piddle over details like a lot of you Considerate Individuals, but I won't and I'm not sure I ever will.
Because I'd really like to talk about What This Book Is, at least to me. I'll keep it brief.
THE HOLY WORD
O.S.R. is a Sourcebook for the Cleric. The Aimless Class. And it is a necessary addendum. The Class of muddy identity and (at times) scornful spell list. This is a quick sense of direction. And a breath of fresh air (make a saving throw vs Breath Weapon). It offers a playful construction towards Clerical background design and the potential to alternatively level within an in-game institution.
In other words, it makes them worth a damn.
And if this is a manifesto, let's just say It Is, then I propose a serious project be undertaken to create a series of Lamentations Gods/Religious Orders using Obscene Serpent Religion as the standard design, length and breadth of conceptual content.
I mean, everybody's got a Bible.. in some form. And I guess that's maybe what those quotes were about, for me at least. I don't really feel like thinking about it all that much.
Peace Dogs.
